<image:title>Stories from the Grand Canyon - Preparing for the Most Challenging Adventure of my Life</image:title>
<image:caption>The heat, the sun, the stairs, the incline all took a toll on my body. I did not fuel properly – a Payday candy bar I stuffed in my backpack last minute turned out to be a life saver. It took me almost twice as long as I anticipated, but eventually I made it, thanks to the kind diligence and encouraging words of a certain Run2Revive leader. He simply would not let me quit. Of course, I was at the bottom of the canyon with no way out but up – but without him I might still be at the bottom. I really thought I was better prepared.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories from the Grand Canyon - Preparing for the Most Challenging Adventure of my Life</image:title>
<image:caption>The Grand Canyon experience was with out a doubt the most challenging and rewarding adventure of my life. I am extremely grateful to the team at Run2Revive; not only for the Rim2Rim run but for their efforts in the fight to prevent and to cure Alzheimer’s and ALS. I admire your relentless determination. I look forward to next year. Until that time may we keep our hearts full and our legs churning.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories from the Grand Canyon - Deciding To Go Down</image:title>
<image:caption>Have you ever been to the Grand Canyon? It is a beautiful, jaw dropping, ecological marvel. If you’ve never seen it, I highly recommend going. If you are sane, do not attempt running across it. That is just crazy. That’s what has brought me to my current automaton state. Most people, the not crazy ones, visit the Canyon from the perches of its rim on either the North or South side.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories from the Grand Canyon - Deciding To Go Down</image:title>
<image:caption>Dust covers my shoes. We’re hours into our run when I realize the path below me has changed colour yet again. Have you ever wondered at the colours represented in nature? The canyon displays an array of colours, from white to rust-orange, red, a dusty rose, tan, brown and black just in the dust on the ground. As I look down at my feet, I begin to think about all the feet that have walked this very same path before me. Thousands of people, hundreds of thousands, millions? The number of people I have crossed today alone is surprising. As we pass and say our hello’s I can’t help but be surprised at these people.</image:caption>

<image:caption>While we are on the topic of packing, let’s talk about nutrition and hydration. If you are attempting to run a Rim2Rim2Rim, you should have enough experience in long endurance events to know what type and amount of foods work best for you. For me, I carry 400 calories per hour plus an extra 1,000 calories in reserve.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Spirits were high as we refueled and gathered ourselves to head back across the canyon. However, Matt hung back and with an air of reticence, let us know that he was going to call it quits for the day. Crossing the canyon is something that should not be attempted lightly, and as it turned out, Matt made the right choice that day. About 10 minutes into the drive back to the south rim, he had Tom pull over and had what he described as the most violent bout of vomiting of his life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories from the Grand Canyon - Running For My Mom</image:title>
<image:caption>On November 17, 2018, my amazing Mum took her last breath after a seven year battle with Alzheimer’s. She was only 70 years old when she passed away. My mum was amazingly vibrant, caring, funny, tenacious and intelligent. Alzheimer’s took all of that away from her. The disease left her immobile, non-communicative and often sad and scared. Until I walked this journey with my Mum I had no idea how horrible this disease truly is..</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories from the Grand Canyon - Running For My Mom</image:title>
<image:caption>On our quest to Cottonwood, we came across a stream, which I promptly laid myself in. It was a glorious relief and I could have stayed there for hours. But, the BATS! Yes, BATS… 3 of them began swooping and diving at us. We had to keep moving. Cottonwood… ‘just around the corner’. What I expected to be the least challenging stretch, proved to be the most challenging, for me. Although I knew I’d trained hard and thought I was well-prepared, I realized that nothing can truly prepare you for this journey. The one big question I had going into this was how I would tolerate the heat.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories from the Grand Canyon - Running For My Mom</image:title>
<image:caption>Keep pushing on… up, up, up. We were now trudging through a fine, dusty sand - not the easiest to move through but I keep pushing on. When we reached Coconino Overlook, Rob let me know this was a significant milestone. The last water refill station before the North Kaibab trailhead. YES! That must mean we are CLOSE-ish? Keep pushing on… up, up, up. I kept focussing on the top of each switch-back. At one point, Rob reached the top of the switch-back and yelled down to me, “We’re getting close! Maybe another mile!” I thought, “YESSSS!!! We are close! Another mile… I can do another mile!”</image:caption>
